ABC reality show contestant apologises for Gina Rinehart slur

Kate McGuinness, a contestant on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Race Around the World, issued a public apology after a four‑minute segment of her film ended with a graphic, violent description of mining magnate Gina Rinehart. The clip prompted complaints from Rinehart and her company Hancock Prospecting, which demanded an apology and removal of the segment. The ABC referred the matter to its internal Ombudsman for review and said the material was intended as satirical, not to promote violence. Communications Minister Anika Wells described the segment as “unacceptable”. The broadcaster has declined further comment while the Ombudsman’s review proceeds, and the series finale is scheduled for 9 August.
