ABC's 'The View' Turns Down NYC Mayor Mamdani's Request to Feature Socialist Candidates Amid FCC Probe
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani asked ABC’s daytime talk show “The View” to host two Democratic‑socialist congressional candidates, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez. The program declined, saying it needed to proceed cautiously while the Federal Communications Commission is investigating the show’s compliance with the equal‑time rule after a February interview with a Texas Senate candidate.
During a June episode, co‑host Sara Haines called Chevalier an antisemite, prompting an aide to Mamdani to confront ABC executives and warn that the remarks could affect future appearances. ABC maintains that “The View” is a bona‑fide news interview program and therefore exempt from the equal‑time requirement, while the FCC’s inquiry remains open with no final ruling.
The show has scaled back bookings of candidates in contested races since the FCC investigation began, though it continues to feature elected officials such as Vice President JD Vance and Senator Chris Murphy.
