Abdalá Bucaram arms trafficking trial rescheduled for October 12

The criminal trial against former Ecuadorian President Abdalá Bucaram Ortiz regarding alleged illegal arms and ammunition trafficking has been rescheduled. A criminal tribunal suspended the hearing held this Tuesday at the Albán Borja Judicial Unit in Guayaquil, setting a new date for October 12, 2026, at 10:00.

The investigation originated from a June 2020 police raid on a residence in northern Guayaquil linked to Bucaram. During the operation, authorities seized a firearm and ammunition, which formed the basis of the prosecution's case. The Attorney General's Office intended to present testimonies and evidence during the suspended hearing to support the accusations.

The legal process has faced several delays, including a previous postponement in August 2026 caused by a power outage at the judicial facility. Bucaram maintains the presumption of innocence as the tribunal continues to evaluate the evidence to determine criminal responsibility.
