Egypt's el-Sisi reaffirms support for Palestinian statehood during meeting with Abbas
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo to discuss the Palestinian cause and regional developments. El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's firm stance against the displacement of the Palestinian people and any attempts to liquidate the Palestinian cause. He emphasized that establishing an independent Palestinian state based on international legitimacy is the only path to lasting peace and stability in the Middle East.
El-Sisi also noted Egypt's ongoing efforts, in coordination with mediators, to implement the ceasefire agreement reached during the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit in October 2025. This includes ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid and facilitating the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
During the visit, President Abbas expressed gratitude for Egypt's historical support and its role in defending Palestinian rights. He highlighted the growing international recognition of the Palestinian state and the shift in global public opinion. Abbas also stressed the importance of holding Palestinian elections, including legislative and Palestinian National Council elections, to renew institutions and strengthen democratic participation.
