Abdelali Benamour, founder of HEM and Moroccan economist, dies

Abdelali Benamour, a prominent Moroccan economist, academic, and institutional leader, has passed away at the age of 85.

Benamour was widely recognized for founding HEM in 1988, which grew into one of Morocco’s leading private management schools. His academic career included professorships at Mohammed V University in Rabat and Hassan II University in Casablanca, following his studies at the Sorbonne.

Beyond academia, he held significant public roles, most notably serving as the president of the Competition Council (Conseil de la concurrence) from 2008 to 2018. He also served on the board of Bank Al-Maghrib and was a member of several national commissions, including the Special Commission on Education and Training (COSEF) and the National Human Rights Council. His professional life spanned university teaching, corporate management, and political service as a deputy for Casablanca between 1976 and 1981.
