Abdelaziz Barik wins parliamentary seat in Midelt
Abdelaziz Barik, widely known on social media as Osama Barik, has won a seat in the Moroccan Parliament representing the Midelt constituency. Running under the Party of Unity and Democracy, Barik secured the party's only seat in the 2026 legislative elections, reportedly leading the competition with 32,684 votes.
Barik, a 28-year-old geography graduate from the village of Asntath, rose to prominence as a digital advocate for the marginalized mountain communities of the Atlas region. His platform focused on the daily hardships faced by residents in the Midelt province, including the difficulties students encounter traveling long distances to schools in snowy conditions, the lack of infrastructure, and the challenges of accessing medical care in isolated areas.
Described as a political 'outsider,' Barik utilized his digital presence to highlight issues such as territorial development, rural isolation, and basic service deficiencies. His victory marks a shift from traditional political career paths, as his electoral success was driven by his personal digital following and grassroots advocacy rather than established party machinery.
