Moroccan human rights activist and lawyer Abdelaziz Bennani has passed away at the age of 87. King Mohammed VI issued a message of condolence to Bennani’s family, praising his lifelong dedication to justice, democracy, and the protection of universal human rights.

Bennani was a foundational figure in the Moroccan human rights movement, having co-founded the Moroccan Organization for Human Rights (OMDH) in 1988 and served as its president from 1992 to 2000. His career included significant roles such as a member of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), and president of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network.

Throughout his career, Bennani was known for defending political prisoners and advocates for civil liberties. His activism spanned national, Arab, and international levels, leaving a significant legacy in the legal and human rights landscapes of Morocco and beyond.
