Abdelkarim El Harouni released from Tunisian prison

Abdelkarim El Harouni, the head of the Shura Council for the Tunisian Ennahda Movement, has been released from prison after more than three years of detention. His release follows a ruling by the Tunisian Court of Appeal that upheld a preliminary sentence of two years in prison related to financial corruption charges.

The case involves commercial transactions between an airline owned by businessman Mohamed Freikha and a state-owned petroleum institution. In addition to El Harouni, the court upheld a seven-year prison sentence for Freikha and six-year sentences for former officials of the petroleum institution, along with various fines.

El Harouni, a former Minister of Transport, had been held since September 2023. The Ennahda Movement described his detention as unjust and called for the immediate release of all political prisoners. The legal proceedings against Ennahda leaders have intensified following President Kais Saied’s declaration of exceptional measures in July 2021.
