Abdelmadjid Tebboune defends import regulations and infrastructure projects

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has addressed several key economic and domestic issues. Regarding trade, he defended the use of the Provisional Import Program (PPI) to rationalize imports and control foreign currency usage. He noted that during the review of the second half of 2026, 3,961 small-scale operators requested approximately 130.32 billion dollars in imports, prompting investigations into potential irregularities, including 581 companies registered at a single address in Ouled Fayet.

On the social front, Tebboune attributed rising fruit and vegetable prices to factors other than farmer misconduct and emphasized the priority of protecting citizen purchasing power. He also highlighted the government's focus on increasing non-hydrocarbon revenues and the progress of national digitalization efforts.

In terms of infrastructure, the Algerian government is moving forward with a major railway project to connect Algiers to the far south. The African Development Bank has provided financing for the El Ménéa-In Salah-Tamanrasset section. This is part of a larger 2,000 km rail project intended for completion by 2028. Additionally, the government is preparing the 2027 Finance Bill, which aims to support the business climate and social development.
