Abdominal fat reduction requires aerobic exercise and diet

Abdominal fat accumulation, particularly common after age 40, is linked to increased health risks such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. According to Laura Cartwright, a cardiac rehabilitation specialist and exercise physiologist at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, a common mistake is attempting to target fat loss through exercises focused solely on the abdominal region.

Because the body uses triglycerides as fuel from various locations rather than just the area being exercised, effective reduction requires a combination of aerobic exercise and a healthy diet. Aerobic activities—such as walking, running, swimming, dancing, or even active housework—help create a caloric deficit that promotes fat loss across the entire body.

In addition to aerobic activity, strength training, Pilates, and yoga can improve body composition by building muscle. Experts also emphasize the importance of stress management and adequate sleep, as high cortisol levels can increase appetite and promote fat storage. Following guidelines from the NHS and WHO, which recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, can support long-term results.
