Abdominoplasty procedure insights and benefits in Brazil

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as tummy tuck surgery, goes beyond removing excess skin. According to plastic surgeon Dr. Flávia Bonato, a member of the Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica (SBCP), the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) and the Associação Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica Estética (BAPS), modern abdominoplasty addresses the entire abdominal structure, including muscle separation (diastasis), waist changes, deep‑tissue laxity and localized fat.

The surgery can correct diastasis by plicating the rectus abdominis muscles, restoring abdominal wall firmness and improving trunk stability and body perception. It is frequently performed after pregnancy, major weight fluctuations or substantial weight loss, but it is not a weight‑loss procedure; candidates are usually already near their desired weight.

Dr. Bonato emphasizes that many patients mistakenly believe the problem is only excess skin, while the procedure often requires a combined approach to achieve harmonious and functional results.
