Abdul Aziz Kawam sentenced to 16 years for Surrey bus attack

Abdul Aziz Kawam has been sentenced to 16 years and eight months in prison for a 2023 knife attack on a transit bus in Surrey, British Columbia. The British Columbia Supreme Court ordered a 15 year sentence for attempted murder and 20 months for aggravated assault, to be served consecutively.

The attack occurred on April 1, 2023. Before boarding the bus, Kawam attacked a man at a bus stop near Fraser Highway and 156th Street. Once on the bus, he slashed a passenger in the throat three times. Both victims survived the incident.

Prosecutors determined the attack was carried out to advance the objectives of the Islamic State. George Dolhai, director of public prosecutions, stated the slashing was a deliberate attempt to cause suspicion and fear in public spaces. He noted that while Kawam claimed to act for the Islamic State, the violence was an attack on all Canadians and was not representative of the Islamic faith.
