Abdul El-Sayed discusses Second Amendment interpretation

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate for Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed, has drawn attention to his comments regarding the Second Amendment. During a campaign appearance, El-Sayed addressed the concept of originalism, which suggests interpreting the Constitution within the context of its original writing.

El-Sayed stated that when the right to bear arms was promised, the technology in use consisted of muskets. He remarked, “When they promised the right to bear arms, they had muskets. So, yeah, everyone should have like equal rights to a musket.” He further discussed the Bill of Rights as a compromise intended to protect citizens from government tyranny, noting that the intention was to allow people to bear arms against a potentially tyrannous government.
