Abdul El-Sayed faces scrutiny over medical debt claims
Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is facing scrutiny over claims regarding his record on medical debt relief. Campaign advertisements have asserted that El-Sayed “erased $700 million in medical debt” during his tenure as head of the Wayne County health department. However, records obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests indicate the actual amount erased was approximately $41.7 million, a figure significantly lower than the campaign's claim.
Additionally, El-Sayed’s past statements and policy positions are being highlighted by political opponents. These include his advocacy for undocumented populations during the COVID-19 pandemic and previous comments regarding the funding of breast cancer research. El-Sayed, a progressive Democrat, continues to center his campaign on “Medicare for All” platforms.
