Abdul El-Sayed faces intense scrutiny in Michigan Senate race

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is facing intense scrutiny and personal attacks from Republican opponents during his campaign. At a recent GOP convention, Republicans targeted El-Sayed’s progressive views, his Muslim faith, and his past associations. His opponent, Mike Rogers, has alleged El-Sayed receives funding from extremist groups, a claim for which no proof was provided.

During the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, El-Sayed held a moment of silence and released a video condemning the attacks as a ‘cruel act of terror.’ He used the occasion to criticize Rogers’ legislative record, specifically his votes against the 2010 James Zadroga Act, which provided medical aid to 9/11 first responders and survivors. Rogers has denied these insinuations, stating he advocated for annual funding for victims.

El-Sayed is also focusing his campaign strategy on Michigan’s youth vote, conducting town halls at institutions like Michigan State University to discuss economic issues such as housing costs and healthcare. Meanwhile, the campaign has been marked by heightened tensions, including allegations from the National Republican Senatorial Committee regarding racially charged remarks made by El-Sayed toward Vice President JD Vance and his family.
