Abdul El-Sayed speaks at Islamic convention in Detroit

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed spoke at the Islamic Society of North America’s annual convention in Detroit on Saturday. The event drew scrutiny for featuring speakers who have questioned the official government narrative regarding the September 11 terrorist attacks.

El-Sayed appeared on a panel alongside “The Young Turks” founder Cenk Uygur and Muslim cleric Zaid Shakir, both of whom have publicly cast doubt on certain aspects of the September 11 accounts. The appearance occurred six days before the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

During his remarks to approximately 1,000 attendees, El-Sayed focused on addressing anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States. He stated that some people attempt to make Muslim Americans feel as though they do not belong in the country. He contrasted this with his experience in Michigan, telling the crowd that “Michiganders don’t care how you pray; they care what you pray for and what you hope for.”

The candidate's appearance follows recent political scrutiny regarding a deleted social media post from September 11, 2021, in which he criticized the United States while mourning the lives lost in the attacks.
