Michigan Democratic Senate Primary Heats Up as El‑Sayed Leads Stevens
The Michigan Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate is set for Aug. 4, 2026. The contest pits progressive Dr. Abdul El‑Sayed, a former Wayne County health director, against centrist Rep. Haley Stevens, a four‑term congresswoman. Recent polls show El‑Sayed ahead, with an Emerson College survey giving him 54 % to Stevens’ 39 % and a RealClearPolitics average indicating a double‑digit lead.
El‑Sayed has earned endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez, as well as the United Auto Workers. Stevens is backed by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Sen. Gary Peters. Outside groups have poured roughly $60 million into the race, including about $30 million from AIPAC and affiliated organizations supporting Stevens.
The primary’s outcome will determine the Democratic nominee who will face Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers – endorsed by Donald Trump – in the November general election.
