Abdul-Malik al-Houthi designates son Jibril as successor
Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, leader of the Houthi movement, has reportedly designated his 28-year-old son, Jibril, as his sole successor to ensure a hereditary transition of power. This move comes amid undisclosed approval from Iran and efforts to consolidate family control over the group.
According to sources close to the decision-making circles, Jibril has been undergoing intensive military and political training in Iran. Since mid-2013, military experts from Lebanon’s Hezbollah have reportedly supervised the training of a select group of Houthi family members and close associates to prepare them for future leadership roles.
To secure this succession, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi has reportedly moved to marginalize internal opposition. This includes the removal of his older brother, Yahya Badr al-Din al-Houthi, from his position as Minister of Education, and the reduction of influence held by his uncle, Abdul-Karim Amir al-Din al-Houthi. The latter reportedly survived an Israeli airstrike on August 28, 2025, and was subsequently moved to Oman for medical treatment.
