Abdulla Yameen criticizes Rasmale deal amid corruption allegations
Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has raised criticisms regarding the government’s agreement with Abu Dhabi-based Eagle Hills for the Rasmale project. Speaking at a People’s National Front rally, Yameen characterized the 99-year lease as a “crime” that could undermine national interests and coastal security by allowing foreign settlement without adequate safeguards.
Separately, during closing arguments at the Criminal Court, state prosecutors have accused Yameen of directing a massive corruption scandal involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). Prosecutors allege that the lease of Fuggiri island to a Dubai-based company was structured to generate USD 1 million in bribes for Yameen.
The prosecution claims Yameen abused his presidential authority to facilitate these dealings, including the appointment of Ahmed Adeeb to high-ranking positions despite reports of corruption. While the state alleges the Fuggiri lease was undervalued to divert funds, Yameen’s defense has questioned the basis of the ongoing prosecution.
