Abdullah Öcalan signals shift toward republicanism in Imrali notes
Meeting notes from Imrali Prison, dated between July 20 and August 2, reveal a significant ideological shift in Abdullah Öcalan’s stance regarding the Turkish state and political structure. Öcalan stated that while his movement previously advocated for independence, they are now moving toward a “Democratic Society and Republic movement.” He explicitly noted, “We used to be separatists, now we are republicans,” adding that they will remain republican even if opposed.
Regarding domestic politics, Öcalan addressed the Republican People's Party (CHP) and sent specific greetings to Özgür Özel. He suggested that the CHP should participate in the Parliamentary Monitoring Board and emphasized that the current discussions are a “democratic legal solution” being conducted with the state rather than the AKP. He stated, “The path to democracy passes through Imrali, not Silivri.”
Additionally, the notes contain critiques of the French Revolution and historical purges, as well as geopolitical views. Öcalan characterized Iran as an aggressive and expansionist threat and argued that Iraq should not be left to Iranian influence. He also addressed the historical treatment of Kurds, noting that while previous eras were defined by “nationalist fascist veins,” current conditions for Kurdish language and art in Turkey have improved.
