Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy sentenced to 50 additional years in prison

Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy, a 28-year-old Canadian national, has been sentenced to an additional 50 years in federal prison for a 2020 attack on correctional officers at the U.S. Penitentiary Allenwood in Pennsylvania. This new term will run consecutively to his existing 40-year sentence, which was issued for a 2016 plot to carry out mass-casualty attacks in New York City.

During the 2020 incident, El Bahnasawy used a makeshift weapon to stab one officer in the head and face, resulting in the loss of the officer's right eye. A second officer was stabbed in the hand while attempting to intervene. Following the assault, investigators discovered a note in El Bahnasawy's sock claiming the violence was an attack for the Islamic State, along with a pledge of allegiance to ISIS found in his cell.

El Bahnasawy pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assault with intent to commit murder and providing material support to ISIS. His original conviction stemmed from a conspiracy to detonate bombs and open fire on crowds in Times Square and the New York City subway system during Ramadan.
