Abedin Rexha: Remembering the UÇK fighter known as Sandokan

The 28th anniversary of the death of Abedin Rexha, a prominent early fighter of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK) known by the nickname ‘Sandokan’, is being marked.

Born in Vajnik, Skenderaj, Rexha was active in resistance movements against Serbian-Slavic rule during his youth. After a period of emigration starting in 1992, he returned to Kosovo in the autumn of 1996 to work with commander Adem Jashari.

Rexha was involved in several operations, including crossing the Albanian Alps in May 1997. On November 25, 1997, during an attempt by Serbian police to arrest him in Vajnik, Rexha and his brothers engaged in a confrontation with Serbian forces.
