Palmeiras reaches Libertadores semifinals after penalty shootout win over LDU

Palmeiras has advanced to the Copa Libertadores semifinals after defeating LDU in a penalty shootout in Quito. Despite a late collapse in regulation time where LDU scored twice to make the score 3-2, goalkeeper Carlos Miguel secured the victory by saving two penalties. This win marks only the second successful penalty shootout for the club during the Abel Ferreira era.

The victory comes with a significant setback for the team, as manager Abel Ferreira received an automatic suspension following a red card during the match. This marks his 15th expulsion since joining the club in 2020. Ferreira will miss the first leg of the semifinal against Fluminense.

With this qualification, Ferreira reaches a milestone of six semifinals in seven Libertadores editions managed with Palmeiras. The club now prepares for an all-Brazilian semifinal matchup against Fluminense.
