Dominican Republic political figures debate infrastructure and 2028 election strategies

Political activity within the Dominican Republic is intensifying as various figures from the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) position themselves for future elections. Gonzalo Castillo, a presidential aspirant, has publicly challenged President Luis Abinader regarding infrastructure achievements. Castillo argued that the PLD government executed significant national projects, including various highway bypasses, 58 hospitals, and the Ciudad Juan Bosch urban development, rejecting claims that the current PRM administration has done more.

Regarding electoral strategy, Abel Martínez has criticized the previous Rescate RD alliance, describing it as a “resaca RD” (RD hangover) that harmed the PLD's performance in recent elections. He proposed that any future alliances for the 2028 elections should be negotiated directly between the major opposition parties, the PLD and Fuerza del Pueblo, rather than being influenced by minority parties.

Other internal party discussions include a proposal by Adriano Sánchez Roa to have the PLD hold an internal consultation by February 2027 to select its presidential candidate. Meanwhile, Francisco Javier García expressed concern over the resurgence of illegal boat trips (yolas) to Puerto Rico, citing it as a sign of economic desperation and a lack of opportunity within the country.
