Abelardo De La Espriella backs ban on gender-affirming care for minors

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella has announced his administration's support for the ‘Ley Laura’ (Bill 211 of 2026). The legislative project, currently in the Senate, seeks to prohibit gender-affirming treatments for minors under the age of 18, including puberty blockers, hormonal treatments, and gender-affirming surgeries.

De La Espriella stated that the initiative is an “indispensable legislative instrument” designed to protect children from irreversible interventions and doctrines that could impact their normal development. He emphasized that the cause is of the “highest importance for the country” and requires firm institutional backing.

The announcement follows a conversation between the President and Mexican influencer Samuel Adrián, director of the documentary ‘Colombia: fábrica de niños trans’. De La Espriella also addressed the recent detention of Adrián, describing the measure taken against him as arbitrary while affirming the security and rule of law provided by the national police force.
