Colombia: Proposal to transfer 100,000 million pesos from JEP to judicial branch

Senator Enrique Gómez Martínez has proposed a significant reallocation of funds within Colombia's 2027 General National Budget. The proposal seeks to reduce the operating budget of the Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz (JEP) by 100,000 million pesos and transfer those resources to the Superior Council of the Judiciary.

Gómez argues that the JEP has cost 4 trillion pesos with “disastrous” results, and that the funds are needed to address a backlog of approximately 2.2 million pending processes in the ordinary justice system. The redirected funds would be used to create new judicial offices and formalize appointments within the judicial branch.

President Abelardo De la Espriella has publicly expressed his support for the proposal. However, JEP Magistrate Alejandro Ramelli has warned that such a cut would compromise the institution's ability to maintain essential operations, including territorial deployment and victim protection. The proposed reduction represents approximately 62% of the JEP's allocated budget for goods and services.
