Colombia President defends JEP budget cuts as fiscal responsibility
Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has defended proposed budget reductions for the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), characterizing the move as an act of fiscal responsibility rather than political retaliation. The President stated that the administration's priority is to strengthen the ordinary judicial branch, which currently faces significant congestion.
According to government figures, the JEP has received over 3 trillion pesos since 2018. For the 2027 budget, the tribunal requested 947,642 million pesos, but the current project allocates 821,803 million pesos. De la Espriella also questioned the tribunal's administrative efficiency, noting that its 2026 payroll is estimated at 404,477 million pesos.
In response, JEP President Alejandro Ramelli has alerted the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding potential threats to the tribunal's independence. The JEP warns that the proposed reallocation of 100,000 million pesos—part of an initiative to transfer funds to the Superior Council of the Judicature—could result in institutional asphyxiation and compromise the protection of victims and witnesses.
