Abelardo de la Espriella faces scrutiny over assets and fiscal budget

President Abelardo de la Espriella faces scrutiny over his asset declarations following an investigation by Cuestión Pública. The report highlights inconsistencies in his sworn statements, noting that his filings were corrected four times in a single night on August 24. Significant changes were observed in his reported 'Other income,' which rose from approximately $42 million to over $516 million pesos, and his savings account balance, which increased from $44,515 to $45,044,515 pesos. Additionally, the investigation points to a lack of detail regarding investments in the United States and Italy, as well as unspecified fixed assets.

Simultaneously, the new administration is addressing a significant fiscal challenge. The government has presented a 2027 budget of $634.9 trillion pesos, representing 29.9% of the GDP. This figure is $59 trillion pesos higher than the previous proposal, which officials claimed left key sectors such as health, pensions, and education underfunded. The budget allocation shows that 62% is designated for operations, 24% for debt service—reaching a historical high—and only 14% for investment. Finance Minister Miguel Gómez Martínez noted that the budget aims to address deficits left by the previous administration's spending and revenue trends.
