Colombia healthcare crisis: rising injunctions and new Senate appointment
Colombia is facing a significant crisis in its healthcare system, characterized by rising legal demands and instability. According to the Defensoría del Pueblo, more than 312,000 health-related injunctions (tutelas) were filed in 2025, with projections suggesting this number could reach 318,000 by the end of 2026.
Data from the Fundación Luz Oncológica highlights the severity of the situation: 62.5% of health system affiliates are currently part of Health Promoting Entities (EPS) that are under state intervention or supervision. Additionally, complaints against Nueva EPS rose by 107% in 2025, and over 4,100 Health Service Providers (IPS) have closed despite a growing number of affiliates.
In legislative news, lawyer Emiliano Rivera Bravo has been elected as the secretary of the First Commission of the Senate. Rivera Bravo, who has previously served in the National Electoral Council and as secretary of the First Commission of the House of Representatives, will oversee matters including constitutional reforms and fundamental rights.
