Aberaeron councillor reports distressing animal cruelty incidents

A local councillor in Aberaeron, Wales, has called for increased awareness of animal welfare following reports of distressing animal cruelty involving crabs in the town's harbour.

Councillor Elizabeth Evans reported that two young boys were involved in incidents where crabs were reportedly stamped on until they died, placed in roads to be run over by vehicles, or held with limbs missing. Some crabs were also reportedly fed to seagulls. The incidents were witnessed by several people, including children who were reportedly extremely distressed by the events.

The matter has been reported to both the local council and the police. In response, Ceredigion County Council’s Ecology Team is providing guidance on reporting such incidents, and the wildlife team plans to establish a ‘Clwb Cranc’ (Crab Club) to educate the public on responsible crabbing practices.
