Aberdeen fire that killed two sisters caused by candle in flat below

An official incident report has determined that a fire which killed two sisters in Aberdeen in January 2024 was caused by a candle in a flat located below theirs.

Shikshya Subedi, 24, and Aanchal Subedi, 28, died in the blaze at a block of flats on Back Hilton Road. A joint investigation by Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) concluded that a candle ignited a mattress in a neighboring flat, causing the fire to spread rapidly, aided by a highly flammable lithium battery.

While the investigation found no suspicious circumstances, the sisters' family has expressed profound devastation. Their older sister, Susan, noted the significant impact the loss has had on their family. The legal firm Digby Brown has been engaged by the family to assist in their pursuit of answers regarding the tragedy.
