Aberystwyth University develops high‑protein drink for older adults
Scientists at Aberystwyth University, in partnership with Welsh research firm Ymchwil Tetrim Research, are creating nutrient‑rich protein powders designed to combat malnutrition in people over 65. The product will be offered as a drink in familiar coffee and cocoa flavours, combining plant‑based proteins (hemp seed) and dairy proteins (whey, casein) with ingredients such as lion’s‑mane mushroom, vitamins and minerals.
Researchers are using an artificial stomach bioreactor to simulate human digestion and assess how much protein and other nutrients are absorbed. Dr Pilar Martinez Martin leads the project, while Dr Thomas Wilson heads the university’s Protein Quality Assessment Unit. The aim is to support muscle strength, cognitive health and overall wellbeing for the estimated one‑in‑ten older adults in the UK who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition.
