Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien summoned over Camac Street billboard dispute
Police in Kolkata have issued notices to Trinamool Congress leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O'Brien following a confrontation at the party's Camac Street office. The incident began when municipal workers and police attempted to remove a billboard from the building, which authorities claimed was unauthorized and hazardous.
The attempt to remove the sign led to clashes, resulting in three separate cases filed at the Shakespeare Sarani Police Station. Some of these cases include non-bailable charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against several party members. Fourteen people have already been arrested in connection with the unrest.
Abhishek Banerjee's legal team has challenged the police, claiming that the FIR and notice were not uploaded to the official website, which they argue violates Supreme Court guidelines. While the police have responded by pointing to documents available online, the legal dispute continues. Derek O'Brien has requested a seven-day extension to appear for questioning.
