Abhishek Banerjee summoned to Enforcement Directorate in West Bengal school‑job case

Trinamool Congress (TMC) national secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was ordered to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at its Salt Lake office in Kolkata on June 15. The appearance is part of the agency’s investigation into a multi‑crore cash‑for‑school‑job scandal involving alleged irregularities in the recruitment of primary teachers and other staff in West Bengal’s state‑run schools.

Banerjee’s name is listed in charge sheets filed by both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the ED, though he has not been formally named as an accused. He previously endured an eight‑and‑a‑half‑hour interrogation by the West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over a separate “signature‑mismatch” probe. On June 16 he is slated to face the CID again in connection with an FIR accusing him of inciting violence and threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the state assembly elections.

The ED’s focus also includes Leaps & Bounds Private Limited, a firm where Banerjee once served as chief executive officer, and the agency has previously attached properties worth billions of rupees under the Prevention of Money‑Laundering Act.
