Abhishek Banerjee attacked by protesters in Sonarpur, West Bengal

During post‑election unrest in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee travelled to Sonarpur to meet the family of a party worker killed after the poll. He was met by a large crowd of protesters carrying black flags, who surrounded his vehicle and began throwing bricks, eggs, shoes and other objects, breaking his glasses. Security forces moved him into a house for safety before police and central forces broke through the crowd and rescued him.

Banerjee was taken to a nearby hospital on a wheelchair, where he was examined by a medical team. Party leaders including Mamata Banerjee and his mother Lata Banerjee visited him. He accused the police and administration of failing to provide adequate protection and claimed the assault was a pre‑planned attack orchestrated by opponents, vowing legal action against those responsible. The incident has heightened political tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the state.
