Abhishek Banerjee Charged with FIR Over Provocative West Bengal Election Remarks

West Bengal police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, for alleged incendiary statements made during the state assembly election campaign.

The complaint, lodged by activist Rajiv Sarkar on May 5, alleges that Banerjee delivered provocative remarks between April 27 and May 3 that could incite public disorder and communal tension, and that he threatened Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The FIR, recorded on May 15 at the Bidhannagar North Cyber Crime Police Station, cites sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of People Act. Police are reviewing video evidence of the speeches as part of the investigation.
