TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee asks for delay on CID summons in signature forgery probe

National secretary of the Trinamool Congress and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee has been served with a CID notice in a case alleging forged signatures on West Bengal Assembly documents. He appealed for additional time to appear for questioning, citing a pending petition before the Calcutta High Court and his commitments in Delhi.

The CID rejected his request and issued a third summons, giving a 24‑hour deadline for his appearance at the agency’s Kolkata office. Banerjee did not attend, and his office said he had written to the CID explaining his unavailability. Legal analysts note that failure to comply with a summons does not automatically trigger arrest; the matter remains under investigation and is awaiting a court hearing.

The issue has sparked political debate, with the opposition alleging it is a tool of intimidation, while authorities describe it as a routine legal process.
