Abhishek Banerjee faces West Bengal CID probe over assembly signature irregularities

West Bengal’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is probing alleged discrepancies in the signatures of Trinamool Congress legislators on proposals to nominate opposition leaders, deputy speakers and a chief whip in the state assembly. Party secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee was issued a notice on 30 May and is expected to appear at the CID headquarters by Monday.

Earlier in the week two private hospitals refused to admit Banerjee, stating “Admission not required”. His aunt, former chief minister Mamata Banerjee, brought him back to his residence on Kalighat Road and announced that a “hospital‑like facility” would be set up there. Banerjee said he will cooperate with the investigation after taking legal advice, though he has not explained why the notice was served.
