Abhishek Banerjee Files Disqualification Petitions Against 20 Rebel TMC MPs Amid Airport Security Threat
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Lok Sabha leader Abhishek Banerjee met Speaker Om Birla and submitted twenty separate petitions seeking the disqualification of twenty TMC MPs who have claimed to join the little‑known Nationalist Citizens Party of India. Banerjee argued that under the Tenth Schedule and the rule that two‑thirds of a party must merge, the MPs' individual “merger” is invalid and they should lose their seats.
At the same time, TMC warned of a security threat at Kolkata Airport ahead of Banerjee’s return from Delhi, alleging that an armed BJP supporter planned to target him. Party officials said the incident involved a confrontation between BJP supporters and TMC workers, with claims that a weapon was brandished. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar called for calm. Banerjee arrived in Kolkata, met with party leaders and is slated to see former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee later in the day.
