Abhishek Banerjee granted protection from arrest in three cases by Calcutta High Court

The Calcutta High Court has directed that no coercive action be taken against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee in connection with three First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against him. Justice Saugata Bhattacharya ruled that custodial interrogation is not necessary at this stage and granted protection from arrest until November 30.

While the court limited its order to the three specific cases detailed in the petition, it directed the state government to provide Banerjee with copies of all FIRs and complaints filed against him across West Bengal. The judge noted that requiring separate petitions for every FIR would lead to a multiplicity of litigation.

Banerjee has been instructed to cooperate with the ongoing investigations and must be provided with at least 48 hours’ notice before being called for interrogation. Additionally, the court ruled that Banerjee may not travel abroad without the High Court’s permission, though this does not obstruct the medical travel previously authorized by the Supreme Court for his eye treatment.

The next hearing is scheduled for November 23, at which time the police are expected to present a progress report on the investigations.
