Abhishek Banerjee interrogated by CID, scolded by Kolkata High Court over signature forgery

The Trinamool Congress national secretary Abhishek Banerjee was summoned again by the CID after a 5½‑hour questioning on 14 June that investigators said did not yield satisfactory answers. The agency noted his anger and evasive responses, and issued another summons for him to appear at the CID headquarters.

Earlier, on 11 June, the Kolkata High Court rebuked Banerjee for repeatedly avoiding CID appearances. The court ordered him to report to the CID office by 6 p.m. on the same day and granted him a 21‑day protection from arrest, while emphasizing his duty to cooperate with the investigation.

The case stems from allegations that signatures on a resolution paper presented in early May were forged. Several legislators complained that the document, supposedly signed by 70 members on 6 May, contained block‑letter signatures that appeared fabricated. The CID has been questioning multiple legislators, and Banerjee also faces a summons to the Enforcement Directorate on 15 June in a related recruitment scandal.
