Abhishek Banerjee faces multiple legal notices and court hearings

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has been served with several legal notices across different jurisdictions. On June 12, West Bengal CID officers visited his Kolkata residence and, after waiting two hours, handed a notice to an office employee directing him to appear before investigators on June 16 in connection with a poll‑speech case. The same agency had earlier questioned Banerjee for nearly six hours over alleged signature forgery linked to the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.

A lower court in Tripura’s Khowai district has also issued a notice ordering Banerjee to appear in person on June 22 regarding a complaint lodged after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections. The summons was routed through a Kolkata court and delivered to the Kalighat police station, which handles the residences of both Mamata and Abhishek Banerjee.

In a related political dispute, the Calcutta High Court has questioned the West Bengal Speaker’s decision to recognise expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of Opposition without the party’s consent. The TMC has filed a petition asserting that the appointment violates the Constitution’s Tenth Schedule, and the court granted Banerjee interim protection from arrest in the case. The party continues to challenge the Speaker’s recognition of breakaway faction leaders, emphasizing that the authority to appoint opposition leadership rests with the party itself.
