Police raid Abhishek Banerjee’s Kolkata home amid political dispute

In the early hours of June 13, police teams from West Midnapore’s Salboni station, Kolkata police and Central Armed Police Forces arrived at Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s Kalighat residence in Kolkata. After a two‑hour wait, they broke the lock with help from the state Disaster Management Department and searched the house for several hours, finding no evidence or seizure. The operation was aimed at locating Banerjee’s absconding aide Sumit Roy, who is wanted in a financial‑fraud/land‑case.

Banerjee was later questioned by the CID in a signature‑forgery probe and faces further interrogations by the CID and Enforcement Directorate on June 14‑16. TMC leaders, including Sagarika Ghose, described the raid as “political vendetta, intimidation and mental torture,” quoting Ghose: “No evidence. No wrongdoing. NOTHING.” Mamata Banerjee rushed to the site and condemned the action as part of “Operation Lotus.” BJP officials acknowledged the investigations but also blamed Roy’s alleged corruption.

The pre‑dawn raid has heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with both parties accusing each other of misuse of investigative agencies.
