Abhisit Vejjajiva demands clarity on Southern Thailand security policy

Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, has expressed deep concern regarding the escalating unrest in Thailand’s southern border provinces following multiple coordinated attacks on August 22. He criticized the current government for lacking a clear and substantive policy to address the conflict, noting that the official stance remains limited to the brief principle of “understand, reach, and develop.”

Abhisit argued that while security forces and law enforcement are performing their duties, a successful resolution requires a comprehensive policy framework that integrates security mechanisms, law enforcement, and diplomatic dialogue. He expressed skepticism toward the National Security Council’s goal of stabilizing the region by next year and the proposed plan for troop withdrawals.

In response to the recent symbolic attacks, the Democrat Party intends to coordinate with the opposition leader to submit an urgent motion for a live parliamentary debate. Abhisit emphasized that the Prime Minister must personally appear to clarify the government’s strategic direction and long-term approach to resolving the southern insurgency.
