ABI reports surge in digital banking and technology spending for 2025

The Italian Banking Association (ABI) reports a significant increase in the use of digital channels for banking operations in 2025. According to the fifteenth annual report from the ABI Lab Digital Banking Observatory, technology spending in the sector exceeded 6.3 billion euros in 2025.

Growth is primarily driven by mobile banking, with active app users increasing by 5.7% compared to 2024. Mobile operations have reached a volume nearly three times higher than internet banking. Additionally, instant transfers have seen substantial growth, rising by 130.5% via mobile banking and 154% via internet banking.

Investment in cybersecurity remains a top priority, with nearly 2.5 billion euros allocated between 2020 and 2025 to protect data and operations. Approximately 77% of banks operating in Italy have increased their investments in mobile banking to improve customer experience, process efficiency, and security.
