Abia State begins N61.8bn gratuity payments and resolves university strike

The Abia State Government has commenced the payment of N61.8 billion in outstanding gratuity arrears owed to state and local government retirees. This total liability covers unpaid amounts accumulated between 2001 and 2025.

According to Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu, the debt breakdown includes N7.2 billion from 2001 to 2010, N43.6 billion from 2011 to May 2023, and N10.9 billion from May 30, 2023, to the present. A state-constituted committee verified these liabilities to establish a repayment framework.

In addition to the pension settlements, the administration has resolved the issues that triggered a strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Abia State University, Uturu.

Separately, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Prince Uzo Nwachukwu noted that the administration under Governor Alex Otti is making progress in infrastructure, healthcare, and human capital development as the state marks its 35th anniversary.
