Abia State government addresses infrastructure vandalism and flooding
The Abia State Government has raised alarms regarding the increasing vandalism of public infrastructure, specifically targeting electricity assets. Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, stated that the theft and destruction of power infrastructure are disrupting electricity distribution and imposing significant financial burdens on the state due to replacement costs.
To combat this, the government has called upon security agencies, traditional rulers, and town union presidents-general to implement new strategies to protect community projects. Residents are also being urged to take ownership of local government infrastructure.
Addressing environmental concerns, the state is working to mitigate recurring flooding by intensifying the clearing of drainage channels through the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) and the Ministry of Environment. Additionally, the state is progressing with the Abia Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme, which includes the ongoing rehabilitation of five water schemes across three sanitary zones.
