Abia State Governor Alex Otti announces educational reforms and political retirement
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced several policy shifts and political intentions. He has signed an Educational Reforms Bill affecting both public and private schools. The law aims to reduce costs for parents by capping school leaving certificate fees at N2,000, allowing for reusable textbooks, and banning extravagant graduation ceremonies for nursery and primary students. Additionally, the law mandates that students remain in one school for senior secondary education to curb examination malpractice.
On governance, Otti has addressed local government tenure, declaring that the 17 chairmen and 184 councillors elected in November 2024 will serve full four-year terms, ending a previous practice of two-year interim terms.
Regarding his political future, Otti stated he intends to retire from active politics after completing his current tenure to allow younger Nigerians to take leadership roles. He emphasized that he will not seek further elective office, such as a Senate seat, nor will he act as a political godfather, asserting that his successor should emerge based on merit.
