Abia State reviews policy framework for senior citizens’ welfare

The Abia State Government has completed a review of the draft policy framework intended to implement the Abia State Senior Citizens Centre Law No. 4 of 2025. The review took place during a two-day stakeholders’ validation workshop in Umuahia, organized by the state government and the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection.

The initiative aims to provide a framework for protecting and promoting the welfare of elderly residents. Dr. Otti Nwaka, Coordinator and Facilitator of the Abia State Senior Citizens Centre, noted that the policy is essential for the effective implementation of the existing law, which was adopted from the National Senior Citizens Centre in Abuja.

Representatives from UNICEF and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) expressed support for the policy, stating it aligns with the state’s social protection agenda. Dr. Victor Chima of UNICEF assured that these organizations would continue to assist the state in strengthening and implementing its social protection systems.
