Abia State Specialist Hospital performs successful emergency brain surgery
The Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia has successfully performed its first major neurosurgical procedure. The emergency brain surgery was conducted on a 19-year-old accident victim who was in a critical state following a road accident involving a vehicle and a tricycle.
Medical officials reported that the patient arrived in a deep coma with a life-threatening collection of blood within the skull that was compressing the brainstem. During the four-hour operation, surgeons evacuated over 100 millilitres of blood clot to control the bleeding. The patient has since been moved to the intensive care unit, where they are reportedly making a satisfactory recovery and beginning to move their limbs.
State officials, including Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu and Commissioner for Health Professor Enoch Uche, stated that the successful procedure is a result of sustained government investment in equipping public health institutions and employing specialist surgeons to avoid the need for patient referrals to other facilities.
